We are looking for
Are you a dedicated emerging scholar in the field of wildlife ecology and conservation? Do you have a PhD in ecology or a related field? Do you have a demonstrated interest in the consequences of changes in land use or climate on populations, communities or ecosystems? Or do you apply new technologies to study how these or other drivers affect the distribution and densities of wildlife species, in part to design and test conservation solutions? If the above questions appeal to you and you think you would be a good fit in the Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Group (formerly the Resource Ecology Group) at Wageningen University, then we invite you to apply for a tenure track position to join us.

In this position, you will develop, supervise and carry out high-quality research in collaboration with your existing international networks, your new Wildlife Ecology and Conservation colleagues, and colleagues from other chair groups in the Environmental Sciences Group and other departments at Wageningen University. You will also be dedicated to acquiring funding from a mix of government, EU and private sources. You will publish your research results in leading international academic journals as well as reach out to wide audiences that need your results, i.e., science for impact. In your new position, you will be stimulated to develop an individual research grant application to the Dutch Innovational Research Incentives Scheme (VENI-VIDI-VICI), the European Research Council, or both.

You will also contribute to the teaching programmes at our University that are strongly internationally oriented. At the beginning, you will support and coordinate existing courses taught in the BSc and MSc programmes of Forest and Nature Conservation, Biology, and Animal Sciences. Over the longer term, opportunities will emerge to develop your own courses and contribute to the design and quality of education programmes at the University.

We are looking for two candidates that understand the need of addressing broad research questions on wildlife and the ecosystems in which they occur, such as the advancement of scientific understanding that facilitates the conservation of biodiversity in the Anthropocene. In the context of the group’s current vision on wildlife ecology and conservation, possible focusses of these positions include, but are not limited to, spatial ecology, disease ecology, conservation, plant-animal-resource interactions.

  • Hold a PhD degree in ecology or a related field;
  • Are experienced in acquiring funding and leading internationally oriented research projects;
  • Are experienced in working in multi-disciplinary research teams;
  • Are experienced in delivering high quality education, including supervising BSc and MSc students;
  • Are experienced in supervising PhD students;
  • Have excellent research qualities, as shown by a publication record in international peer-reviewed journals and proceedings of renowned conferences;
  • Function well as a team player;
  • Demonstrate cross-cultural sensitivity and are committed to an inclusive working environment;
  • Have a good command of spoken and written English.

We offer
We are offering two exciting and challenging positions. Both positions fall within the university academic career trajectory called “tenure track”. The tenure track at WUR is an excellent academic environment for you to work and develop within the Wildlife Ecology and Conservation Group to make a difference in our scientific field. Successful evaluation can culminate in the position of Professor holding a Personal Chair. You will have the chance to define your own research line. We offer training and coaching, as well as opportunities to work part-time (0.8 FTE).

In addition to regular performance and development assessments, evaluations regarding tenure track progression will occur every 3 to 4 years. Positive tenure track evaluations will lead to promotions and a permanent position after 7 years. A competitive salary, dependent on experience, will range from a minimum of € 3.637, to a maximum of € 4.978,- (assistant professor position) for a full working week of 38 hours in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement Dutch Universities (scale 11).
