Professor and Chair of Meteorology, Wageningen University & Research

We are looking for
We are looking for an innovative, dynamic and inspiring scholar in the field of Meteorology to join our faculty and lead the Meteorology section within the Meteorology and Air Quality Group (MAQ) at Wageningen University & Research (0.8 - 1.0 fte).

The mission of the Chair of Meteorology is to advance knowledge and educate students on the fundamental principles and applications of weather and climate science, and to relate those to the core themes of Wageningen University & Research (WUR). The Meteorology section focuses on investigating the atmospheric boundary layer and its interaction with land and water surfaces. With a history of more than 100 years, the section’s interests focus on providing sound answers to current and future societal demands. Examples are the influence of atmosphere-land processes on extreme weather events, the improvement of weather prediction capabilities for solar and wind energy, the understanding and representation of the modification of atmospheric processes by changes in climate and natural/urban landscapes, and the influence of weather and climate on food production. To achieve these aims it is essential to obtain a solid understanding of the underlying atmospheric processes. This fundamental knowledge is transferred to improve weather and climate model representations. Furthermore, this know-how enables the group to play an active role in meteorological aspects that influence air quality, urban/rural environments, and agrometeorological research. To enable its research, the group develops and maintains a complete hierarchy of numerical atmospheric models, as well as an innovative observational infrastructure.

The staff members teach courses at BSc and MSc level. They strongly support innovative educational methods to facilitate the transfer of up-to-date knowledge and skills from MAQ’s research topics to BSc and MSc levels. This innovation includes the development of user-friendly software such as conceptual land-atmosphere models, instruction/knowledge clips and the continuous renewal of course manuals, teaching methods and didactical processes.

As Chair of Meteorology, together with the Chair of Air Quality, you will lead the Meteorology and Air Quality (MAQ) group. You will support the group’s research ambitions by further strengthening its position in national and international networks, by managing its internal processes and relations in a constructive and cooperative way, and by strengthening established research lines and bringing in novel ideas. In addition, you will play an active role in education at the undergraduate and graduate level. You will also give new impulses to further develop the contents of its courses, its teaching methods, and the coherence of the education programmes in which it takes part. You will ensure the group provides a supportive working environment to academics at a range of career levels. Strengthening the acquisition of external funding for research, and attracting PhD candidates are key elements of your responsibility.

We ask
As a successful candidate, you will have:
  • a doctorate (PhD degree) in atmospheric sciences, preferably with a focus on the atmospheric boundary layer, including subjects related to land-atmosphere interactions;
  • an outstanding scientific track record and international research profile;
  • an inspiring long-term vision regarding the development of the scientific field, the research agenda and the teaching profile of the Meteorology section within the Meteorology and Air Quality Group;
  • a broad international network, as well as active involvement and experience with effective interaction with stakeholders and in the societal debate;
  • a keen interest to work in an interdisciplinary environment;
  • a proven record in acquisition of research funds from national and international agencies;
  • an outstanding record in teaching, mentoring and course development, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, with an ability to work with students from a wide range of backgrounds;
  • the ability to manage professionals and have an inspiring, collegial, and unifying leadership style characterized by a passion to develop people, to build teams, and to create synergy;
  • experience in management, and ability to harvest synergies between ongoing activities;
  • excellent command of English and – for international applicants – willingness to learn Dutch.

We offer

You will be working for an inspiring international organisation with a large number of interdisciplinary projects all over the world. The scientific quality of Wageningen University is affirmed by the prominent position we occupy in international rankings and citation indexes. We offer you a challenging position as full professor of the Chair of Meteorology. Besides a competitive salary, we offer a number of additional benefits, such as an end-of-year extra month’s salary, a holiday allowance and a pension plan with the Dutch pension fund for government and education.

Application
You are invited to send your complete application to Mr. Johan Feenstra via the ''Apply'' button. Your application should include:
  • An application letter with curriculum vitae
  • A separate list of publications
  • Your vision on research and education in the domain of the Chair (Max 2 pages).

The closing date for applications is Friday 4 January 2019.

The Appointment Advisory Committee will interview selected candidates for this position on Tuesday 5 February 2019. The Committee will thereafter invite short-listed candidates for a second interview and a trial lecture on Tuesday 5 March 2019.

Organisation
The present MAQ group is a vibrant, collaborative team of young and mid-career researchers who work in the field of meteorology and air quality (see www.maq.wur.nl). The meteorology section currently consists of 8 faculty members, 2 special professors, 1 postdoc and 10 PhD candidates supervised by current staff. The meteorology section and air quality section work closely together on those topics where the connection of disciplines is essential. The MAQ group is part of the cluster for Climate, Water and Society (CWS), a new cluster of chair groups within the overarching Environmental Sciences Group (ESG).

The staff of the MAQ group coordinates and teaches courses in the three-year BSc programme Soil, Water, Atmosphere and in the two-year MSc Earth and Environment and Climate Studies programmes.

The Group is efficiently organised and supported by dedicated secretarial, financial and HR advisors. The group and student community is largely international and the courses of the Group are taught in English.
