Researcher Analytical Soil Chemistry (re-announcement)

We are looking for

The chair group Soil Chemistry and Chemical Soil Quality invites applications from candidates for the position of researcher in Analytical Soil Chemistry. You will co-ordinate the associated chemical laboratory (8 FTE) and its involvement in research and teaching. We also expect you to personally contribute to the chair group’s educational activities, and to strengthen analytical innovation and research connections between the chair group and the laboratory. Given our current gender balance, we strongly encourage female candidates to apply.

We ask
We welcome candidates with a PhD in soil science, geoscience or environmental sciences with strong analytical skills and interest, talent for leadership and education. We expect the candidate to have excellent communication skills and become an enthusiastic liaison between the chair group and the laboratory, and to share his/her enthusiasm for the research and educational domain in which we are active with students in lectures and practicals, as well as with others inside and outside the academic world. Key competences: 5 years of experience in one of the above research domains, a coaching style of leadership, interest in operational management of a research laboratory with specialised professionals, collaborative, flexible, client and result oriented.

We offer
We offer a temporary employment contract as researcher with teaching duties. Salary depends on knowledge and experience with a maximum of € 4.757, - gross per month for a full-time working week (CAO WU) .A part-time position of 0.8 fte is negotiable. We are

The chair group Soil Chemistry and Chemical Soil Quality is engaged in fundamental soil chemical research and education. We aim to develop a generic understanding of soil chemical processes at the molecular scale and nanoscale, in relation to ecosystem services such as soil fertility, carbon sequestration, and sustainment of soil and groundwater quality. In addition, we focus on how these underlying processes and functions are influenced by closing cycles and increasing use of residual/waste materials in the soil environment. We follow a research strategy based on novel experimental/analytical techniques and geochemical model development and application. A large state-of-the-art chemical laboratory and WEPAL, a world-leading organiser of proficiency testing programmes for soil, sediment, plants and organic waste are also embedded in the chair group. Our main research themes are:
  • Soil fertility: soil chemical controls on the bioavailability of nutrients, and their coupling to biological processes, in support of sustainable nutrient management and food security
  • Environmental geochemistry: identifying and quantifying processes that control soil and groundwater quality; new challenges arising from increasing recycling of materials (“circular economy”) and behaviour of emerging contaminants such as manufactured nanoparticles
  • Soil carbon: biogeochemical processes controlling carbon sequestration and nutrient availability; analytical characterization of soil carbon in light of its multiple roles in soil functioning

The chair group is part of the Department of Environmental Sciences of Wageningen University. The department’s fundamental research and education concern our living environment: nature, landscape, land use, mitigation and adaptation to climate change, water management, and various competing claims on space. We are increasingly joining forces in research and teaching among the four soil chairs in the department to advance and disseminate our understanding of interplaying soil chemical, biological, physical and geographical drivers in land-use and ecosystem services.

Wageningen University & Research
Delivering a substantial contribution to the quality of life. That's our focus – each and every day. Within our domain of good and safe food & food production, food security and a healthy living environment, we search for answers to issues affecting society – such as sustainable food production, climate change and alternative energy. Of course, we don’t do this alone. Every day, 5000 people work on ‘the quality of life’, turning ideas into reality, on a global scale.
