We are looking for
Are you a pro-active and experienced senior researcher? Do you have a passion for creating sustainable solutions to provide better food for more people? Then this role might be yours!

You are the expertise leader who will be content-wise responsible for the direction and activities of the applied research group Food Informatics within the research institute Wageningen Food & Biobased Research.

Food Informatics is the domain that deals with digitising information of all parts of food production and consumption, combining data from various sources with expert knowledge to enable smart, new applications. This knowledge and data from the institute and partners is made digitally available using (among other things) semantics, ontologies and artificial intelligence (AI) such as Bayesian networks and machine learning. Examples are a decision support system for quality management of strawberries where we started from scratch to connect data and knowledge to ensure a timely and tasty strawberry at the end of the supply chain. And for the elderly who are dependent on meals on wheels, a decision model was developed that provides food advice based on nutritional and health rules taking into account personal characteristics and preferences. You will lead the team in deciding which technology and which background knowledge is best to be used for the execution of these type of projects.

With colleagues and partners you develop methods to make digital applications possible for our clients. You keep up with scientific and technological developments in the professional field, define the research roadmap of the team and help to translate this into working applications by conducting research together with colleagues within and outside your own expertise group. In cooperation with the Business Development team of Wageningen Food & Biobased Research you approach potential customers and make project proposals.

Important tasks of the senior researcher / expert leader:
  • You will draft project proposals, maintain customer contacts and assist in acquiring new projects
  • You will manage complex projects and manage strategic knowledge development of the group in the projects
  • You will coach the team on developing expertise and involve them in defining the research roadmap
  • You will ensure the quality, quantity and visibility of the scientific output
  • You promote cooperation within the group and with the other research groups within and outside Wageningen
  • You will supervise and co-author scientific and professional publications

We ask
You preferably have a PhD and a background in data science with an affinity for agrifood with a corresponding network in these fields
  • You have a drive for acquisition by means of innovative research proposals
  • You have relevant project management experience
  • It will be an advantage if you are experienced in applied research in a contract research organization or in business

We offer
We offer you a meaningful job with, depending on your experience, a competitive salary and a full working week of 36 hours (minimum 0,8 FTE) in accordance with the Collective Labor Agreement for Wageningen Research. You also have the opportunity to work 40 hours a week with additional holidays.

In addition, we offer:
  • 8% holiday allowance
  • a structural end-of-year bonus of 3%
  • excellent training opportunities and secondary employment conditions
  • flexible working hours and holidays can possibly be determined in consultation so that an optimal balance between work and private life is possible
  • excellent pension plan through ABP
  • 171 vacation hours, the possibility to purchase extra and good supplementary leave scheme
  • the possibility to work a maximum of 40 hours per week and in this way build up a maximum of 204 compensation hours per year
  • a flexible model to put together part of your employment conditions yourself, such as a bicycle plan
